Talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy, is based on the core idea that talking about the things that are bothering you can help clarify them and put them in perspective.
Talk therapy begins with an initial appointment, often referred to as an intake interview. During this appointment, the client will describe what brings him or her to therapy. The therapist will then ask questions to help clarify the nature of the problem, and its duration and severity. S/he will also try to determine the client’s goals for therapy, and will develop a treatment plan.
Individual talk therapy involves a collaborative relationship between the client and the therapist. Each therapist has a somewhat different approach, but all talk therapy provides a supportive environment that will allow you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral and nonjudgmental. You and your therapist will work together to identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best, and you will learn new skills to help you better cope with the specific challenges you face.
